Virgin Mobile Android Phone Activation Error: 06-07-5910

If you're trying to activate a Virgin Mobile Android mobile phone (e.g. Motorola Triumph, Samsung Intercept. etc.) don't panic if you get error code 06-07-5910:

Service is not
available

Error: 06-07-5910

Because, there is a simple solution:
Turn off your phone's WiFi  before  you activate it

That's because WiFi and 3G data service are often mutually exclusive.   If you turn on WiFi, the 3G (cell network) data connection automatically turns off.  And vice versa.

Normally, this is exactly what you want.  But during the activation routine, when the phone tries to test the quality of the 3G data connection, it discovers there is no 3G data at all.

So the test fails miserably.  Up pops an arcane, misleading error message.   As if there were any other kind.

Don't get me started ...

Too late.   :-)   Properly written -- and tested  -- software should have caught this trivial issue, and deactivated WiFi before testing the 3G functionality.  Unfortunately, companies don't like to pay programmers to test software, especially if they can get their customers to test it for free.   That's like so duh, d00d.

Getting this error wasn't your fault, and it doesn't mean you're dumb.  On the contrary, it suggests you're a clever phone-nerd:  You figured out, that by activating WiFi, you could play with your new phone immediately, without having to activate it first.   There's no shame in wanting to play with it.  ;-)

So have fun!

Note: Error codes are very fussy.   if you have a "similar" error number -- but not the exact numeric code shown above -- turning off WiFi probably won't help you.  You'll need to keep searching the web for the precise error code your phone displayed.

I'm so glad to hear my post helped you, and you didn't have to call Virgin Mobile's technical "support": I wouldn't wish that on ANYBODY. :-)

  4. THANK YOU so so much! This is the only site with this advice. Tried for an hour, turned the wifi off, and it activated after the first try. You are my hero.

  10. Then either you aren't in a data-capable area, or you really DO have a bad phone! Oh no!

Wow, worked flawlessly. What a useless error, who would've thought! Google needs to put this page on the top of the search results for this error. Everything above it is garbage! C'mon Google, be RELEVANT!

    1. That's quite a name, Mr. a2b49292-a244-11e1-a357-000bcdcb471e. Did your parents hate you, or what? ;-)

After you turn off the 802.11 (WiFi) network, try rebooting your phone; then make sure your phone displays the '3G' icon, and has at least 2 bars of signal strength before you try to activate.

If, despite these measures, you still can't activate your phone, you'll have to keep searching for a solution. Sorry.

When you DO solve your problem, please come back and POST YOUR SOLUTION here, so other people might benefit from your experience!

      Good luck!

    1. Oh, you mean a LINUX nerd! :-)

That's not surprising. I have a strong hunch this particular problem is specific to nerds. You know, the kind of people who CAN'T WAIT to get on the net, and also are savvy enough to activate WiFi BEFORE activating their phones. Sound familiar?

If the pocket protector fits ... ;-)

    1. Lindsey, please note that you had a DIFFERENT problem, which is designated by a (slightly) DIFFERENT error code: 06-07-5920.

But I'm glad you found a solution to your problem. And thanks for taking the time to share your solution!

For those of you keeping score at home, that's TWO problems down, two gazillion to go. ;-)

  17. Thank you so much, this was driving me crazy, disconnected the wifi and was activated within seconds. Kudos!

  18. I'm getting the 06-07-5920 Lindsey had above. Tried resetting the MDN and MSID but no results. The wifi on the phone is turned off (was always turned off). I tried turning off my home wifi but it still picked up a neighbor's home wifi without connecting to it (where do you go these days that doesn't have a wifi signal somewhere?).

Just spent an hour on the phone with Virgin's tech support and they're going to "investigate it further."

    What now, Mr. Wizard?

  19. Hi Anonymous,

You sure write a lot of comments here. ;-)

As I said before, 5910 and 5920 are very different problems. I've never had the latter, so I can't really help much with that error.

It sounds like you did try the androidforum link Lindsey suggested for the 5920 error, which said to try all zeros for the MDN and MSID.

If that didn't work, maybe try the suggestion at that site from MrVas, who said to enter 10 '1's for both, instead of 10 '0's.

Also, I assume that as long as you see the 3G icon (not wifi icon), you don't have to worry about your neighbor's WiFi. Otherwise, you may have to go to the moon to avoid WiFi. Or worse, have to go to Fresno. ;-)

Sorry I couldn't offer more help. Good luck!

  20. Thank you very much. I should have realized that setting up the wifi connection before activating the phone would haunt me. You've saved me the hassle of calling "support" . So much appreciated!

  26. It seems this is not fixing my problem, my biggest thought on the matter is this phone was already activated in the past to a different account and different number, and it still will not activate under the new plan i signed up for

    ReplyDelete
  27. Thanks for this tip! Tried everything else to no avail, and it was all just as simple as the wifi shutoff you suggested so the 3g data could do its activation without interruption. Appreciate it!
